On Tuesday 14 January 2025, the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence hosted the Workshop:

 

Mortars and dating.

The raw materials used in the production of mortars and their influence on radiocarbon dating

 

Organised by Elena Pecchioni and Sara Calandra, with the support of Carlo Alberto Garzonio and the team of the Laboratory of Stone Materials of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence, this event brought together some of the leading experts in the field.

During the day, new research questions and opportunities were explored, discussing how the raw materials used in the production of mortars influence the application of the radiocarbon method. An important step towards a better understanding and dating of medieval structures!

The workshop was attended by experts from various universities and research institutes who shared their experience and knowledge on the topic. The discussions were lively and stimulating, offering new perspectives and approaches to the dating of ancient mortars.

In addition, the workshop provided a unique opportunity for participants to discuss and collaborate on future projects, creating a network of contacts and partnerships that will contribute to the advancement of research in Medieval Archaeology.
